It’s been a long time since I’ve finished a book in ONE day, let alone a 300+ page book! I was so enthralled with Elizabeth, Hussein, Fatima and Matthew that I couldn’t put the book down. I too felt like a Gazelle in the Shadows, with Elizabeth, I was so trusting with characters I shouldn’t have been and kept looking for the “villains” when the villains had already been presented! I am always excited to read any book about Islam or the Middle East, I minored in Anthropology in college and aways enjoyed the ethnographies set in the Middle East. ***possible spoilers below***
Some questions I asked myself while reading were
- Who are the women Elizabeth ends up staying with and what do they do for work?
- Why did Elizabeth have to leave the elderly couple?
- Why was Elizabeth so trusting and what happened with Naguib? I will say is this is a MUST read book. In fact, I’m handing the book over to my mom as I type this review!
- If I were in a similar situation would I have done anything differently? I think perhaps, what makes this novel so engulfing was that anyone could be Elizabeth if put in the same situation.
